In Focus

Doctors at a Lucknow hospital restored the amputated hands of a 10-year-old girl, caught in the chain of a cement mixer machine at a construction site.

Nida, on her way back from school, was accidentally caught in the cement mixer machine cutting off both her hands.

“It was a very rare and successfully operated case,” said Dr. R.K. Mishra, who led a team of surgeons at the Sushrut Institute of Plastic Surgery to replant the severed limbs of the girl. “Fortunately the parents took this child to me in the golden period of time i.e., within 2-hrs of accident, and we took her to operation theater immediately.”

The surgeons conducted microvascular surgery on both the hands simultaneously and repaired its bones,  arteries, veins, nerves and all musculo-tendinous units after a six-hour long operation.

Dr. Mishra said Nida is now recovering, but she will remain on rehabilitative physiotherapy for at least 6-12 months to fully recover.
